The Harry Potter fandom is so huge that literally everyone has different views and opinions on characters, ships, theories etc, but I don’t think I have ever in my life encountered a Harry Potter fan who doesn’t hate Umbridge with burning passion.

Its good because it makes us unite against a common enemy.

Its strange that the common enemy isn’t the series’s main villain.

Strange, but understandable in context.  Voldemort is completely evil and awful, and yet he has something of a comprehensible viewpoint.  His hatred of Muggles is deplorable, and wrong, but when you learn his backstory you can actually understand where he’s coming from to a degree.  Boiled down to its simplest form, Voldemort has some incredibly overblown daddy issues.

Umbridge, on the other hand, is given nothing of the sort.  From the readers’ perspective, she’s pure evil and has absolutely no reason for being evil other than that she can be.

Almost there.  Still have a lot of stuff to do.

Tomorrow night I’ll be having a sort of grownup slumber party with TK and the Emerald Duchess.  Duch is getting introduced to the magic that is Ouran; we’re going to show her just the first episode and the episode with Kirimi (so she finally understands what TK and I are laughing about whenever we hear the word ‘debauchery’), and then we’re all going to watch Howl’s Moving Castle

I’d really love to get pictures with anyone cosplaying as characters from fandoms in which I’ve written fic (FMA, Ouran, Harry Potter, LXG, Zelda, Professor Layton), so if you’re going to be dressing as any of those, give me a shout in ye olde aske boxe or answer box.

Is everyone else who’s going to be at Z-kon as excited as I am?

How Harry Potter Should Have Ended (from the How It Should Have Ended series)

She knew he would look there, and knew he’d need to see something that would make him smile.

Look at this beautiful headcanon. <3

OMG I love that.  Thequeenbeegeek, are you seeing this?

Ok...Harry Potter, what was it that first made you fall in love with this series?

It only took the first book.

It was the summer of 1999.  Kevin and I were jointly managing a sunglasses stand at a rest station on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.  It was decent money, although the oppressive heat and overwhelming drought of that summer made it uncomfortable sometimes (since it was an outdoor stand).  As the summer started drawing to a close, there were of course fewer travelers, and I was often bored so I would bring books.  One day, I was in Zany Brainy, which no longer exists; they specialized in educational toys and the like, and I found it a fun place to shop.  Anyway, they had the first Harry Potter book in paperback, and I knew I’d seen the name online but I didn’t know much about it.  The synopsis on the back sounded good, so I bought it.

By the time Kevin came to relieve me the next day (I worked 9 am to 3 pm and he worked 3 pm to 9 pm), I had read it twice.  Literally, I finished the first read-through and went back to start reading it again.  ”You have to read this,” I said.  ”It’s, like, brain candy.”  I went home, found out that the Science Fiction Book Club was selling the first three books in hardcover, and ordered them all.  The fourth book came out that fall.

I had two convictions after reading the first book. One was that Dumbledore would die - his remark about “death is but the next great adventure” was like a blinking neon sign to me.  The other was that Ron and Hermione would end up together, because of the way he accused her of nagging him.

This was also the series that got me into writing fan fiction.  I had written just one piece before, for a fandom-specific writing contest, but HP gave me all sorts of rabid plot bunnies.  So I had to get an account on FFN.  I wanted something relevant to the HP fandom, since that was where I anticipated doing so much writing, but there were tons and tons of writers already who had names which included ‘Hermione’ and ‘Ginny’ and even ‘Lily.’  So since I love dragons, I went with Norbert instead, and tacked ‘Lady’ on the front to make it sound better (and female).

And as we know now, Norbert IS a lady.  ;)

She didn’t just change my life, she probably saved it.
